5 ways to achieve a Regenerative sourced diet!

Updated: Sep 13

DID YOU KNOW... "15 companies provide some 60 percent of farm supplies. Six companies handle 95 percent of wheat and corn exports. This concentration of influence means that "agri-culture" - the interwoven set of social, political, economic and spiritual relationships that have evolved around humanity's daily effort to feed itself - is rapidly giving way to corporate agriculture, and important pieces of our biological heritage are being lost. - Jack Doyle "Friends of the Earth"

Something tells me you can't simply wash off what they're spraying... it becomes embedded and absorbed into the cellular structure of the products. Where is my food from? And most importantly, What was it sprayed with?

Not to be pushing doom and gloom, but if you read that the same way I did you would take it in a negative light. However, there is no better time to take a deeper responsibility over the foods you consume. Enter the regenerative space with some positivity!

Where does your food come from? What practices are the farmers using to produce it? At the cellular level do you have confidence your food is truly "organic" and full of nutrients or do you believe it because the label says so? These are some of the questions that go through my head when I put food on my table.

It's due time to understand the importance of converting to a regenerative sourced diet. This cannot be overstated.

And here are the 5 best ways to do it!

1. Have your own local supply chain worked out!

A local source of food is a must. Building these relationships now are how we turn this losing battle with our food and planet around. This way, you can get to know the people! This is very basic but the way to be sure. Ask them about their farm, visit, maybe even volunteer! Most small local farms use regenerative farming practices and are easier to find than you think! Check out a local co-op or farmers markets in your area. Heck, get adventurous, go visit a family farm you may have passed by on a Sunday drive. You would be surprised how very happy they would be to meet you - and sell you their goods! They put their heart and soul into them and have a passion for spreading that joy! You will gain a new relationship, secure a consistent food supply for your family, help out the local farmer, AND you will be helping out the PLANET! If everyone purchased only from regenerative farms the corporations would have no choice but to change their business practices and it would be a massive step towards securing the biological heritage that is being lost. A seemingly "outlandish" goal but practical if we start now! More on this below.

2. Backyard regenerative gardening

The practices of modern farming and the governmental controls that "keep prices down" may make food prices seem "small" but they also make environmental damage "massive". Today we are seeing prices rise on the shelves. Governments subsidize the food conglomerates and champion for the the large farm producers while push pricing controls on the farmers. The food conglomerates are free to essentially set their own price as they wish. The ultimate outcome of this is actually the effect of many farmers essentially treading water to try to increase yields to stay afloat. In order to survive, many turn to pouring millions of pounds of fertilizers and pesticides onto their fields annually. They may benefit with Increased yield for a few years at the expense of quality produce. Ultimately, as an end result, surface and groundwater are exposed to contaminates, millions of tons of soil is eroded each year, and wetlands and wildlife habitats are being destroyed. A hard price to pay for "cheap food". The policy encourages fewer and larger farms while the small family farms and rural communities are all but wiped off the map completely.

The solution? Regenerative farming (can be just simple gardening), yes, even in your own backyard!

The bright-side, the turnaround! One thing I noticed over the past year or two was the increase in the family backyard garden! This is amazing to see. People are reverting back to the traditional ways of living. Having the family garden was a thing of the past for quite some time and I believe the events over the last two years has brought people back to the realization of the fragility of the socioeconomic environment around them. Starting a family garden can seem like a daunting task but it is easier than you think! Start with a simple raised garden bed using the square foot gardening method, or no till gardening. These practices are easy to accomplish with minimal investment and optimal backyard yield. A small amount of land can go a long way! You can feed a family of 4 on just a small section of your backyard!

3. Shop small/shop local

Gardening may not be for everyone, sourcing your own regenerative foods by hitting up that local farm may be too daunting for that 9-5er. But everyone can make this one simple change if regenerative sourcing is on your radar. Sometimes simplicity is best, to achieve this you can get over to that small local natural food store. A quick search online will help you identify these stores and most are stocked with the products we all love.

4. Avoid the aisles

I'm sure you have heard this one before. Stick to the perimeter! If you really must, you could stick to your usual marketplace but avoiding aisles is key. To achieve a truly regenerative sourced diet in the average market can be difficult but over time becomes an easy task. Staying to the outside perimeter of the market keeps you where the wild things go. The produce, the meats, the good stuff! There are some regenerative foods to be found in the aisles but best practice is to read the label to be sure you are on the right track. When shopping the perimeter know who your local food/farm providers are and identify them on the shelf. Try to buy only the local goods you know. Most of them send their goods to your market.

5. Buy online!

There are various online marketplaces that connect you to organic produce or other products. They ship directly to your door. You can search through them all and find what fits you best. Some even have helpful filters for you to use when looking to add to your cart.

In Conclusion

Converting to a regenerative sourced diet could be the very best remedy for the many problems of the current supply chain and "cheap food" policies that are wreaking havoc on the environment. Eliminating subsidies would be hard but in the long run a massive help to farmers and consumers. If we can help the farmer who is willing to use environmentally friendly (regenerative) practices while consumer supports policy change and use the above 5 methods to seek out organic only food products or ask those markets to provide if they are not available then as I said above, these corporations would have no choice but to change their business practices. Your dollar is your power. Buy what you support, support what you love. Your dollar will not only go to the growers who actually care but you will get better tasting and more nutritional food than elsewhere. So if you are looking for a regenerative marketplace, we cant stress enough the importance of finding a local family owned farm! This is the best way!
